188th pilot earns Air Force’s Combat Action Medal for July 4 mission
Col. Mark Anderson, 188th Fighter Wing commander, left, presented Maj. Doug Smutnick, 188th pilot, with an Air Force Combat Action Medal during a recent commander’s call. Smutnick earned the medal during a 2012 deployment to Bagram, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Smutnick was a key participant in a troops-in-contact predicament during a close-air support combat mission July 4, 2012, while piloting a 188th A-10C Thunderbolt II “Warthog” defending the lives of Coalition ground troops engaged in a firefight with the Taliban.
