The 188th Wing announced its annual Outstanding Airmen of the Year award winners during a commander's call at Ebbing Air National Guard Base, Fort Smith, Arkansas Dec. 6.  The 188th Wing commander, Col. Mark Anderson, presented trophies to the AOY Award winners. Second and third places received Outstanding Service Award plaques and the remaining nominees earned Outstanding Service Certificates during the ceremony.

"This year the board had some difficult decisions because the competition was fierce," said Col. Mark Anderson, 188th Wing commander. "Having so many exceptional Airmen nominated is a good problem to have. All the candidates were outstanding. We're proud of each of them and congratulate them for all their hard work and for making the 188th Wing one of the best units in the Air National Guard."

Airman 1st Class Shawn Scheeler from the 123rd Intelligence Squadron took home the Airman of the Year award while Master Sgt. Jean Schnauffer, a technical sergeant during the award period, of the 188th Force Support Squadron was named the wing's Noncommissioned Officer of the Year.

Master Sgt. Mark Strang of the 188th Civil Engineer Squadron won the Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year award and Master Sgt. John Ashworth of the 188th Medical Group nabbed the First Sergeant of the Year accolade.

Airman 1st Class Ashley Feist from the 123rd IS was name the Honor Guard Member of the Year and Maj. Drew Donoho with the 188th Civil Engineer Squadron was the recipient of the wing's Officer of the Year award.

"Thanks to all the supervisors and commanders who spent the time to recognize the efforts of their Airmen," said Chief Master Sgt. Stephen Bradley, 188th Wing command chief. "It took a lot of hard work and preparation to compile the awards packages and put together the board but it was worth every second to ensure our Airmen know how much we appreciate what they do for the 188th and this nation."

The Qualls family was awarded the 188th Family of the Year. Master Sgt. Gregg Qualls was on hand to receive the award. Shirley Bearden was recognized as the 188th Volunteer of the Year and Savannah Sosebee earned the 188th Youth Volunteer of the Year. The 188th Airman and Family Readiness Office also recognized Jody Bergstrom of Camp Alliance with a Community Purple Award for her support of the wing during the 60th anniversary and Conversion Day events.

Scheeler and Feist were unavailable for photos due to their participation in an operational mission with the 123rd IS. Each of the Airmen of the Year Award winners will compete at the state level Jan. 10-11.
